Independence Day in Santa Barbara

Gabriella Hoffman, Chairwoman of Young Americans for Freedom at UCSD

Whenever a TEA party is in need, a YAFer will take heed and help. I am currently interning with a conservative organization in Santa Barbara, CA. Although I could not attend a TEA party event back home in Orange County, I was fortunate enough to assist the Santa Barbara TEA Party and Culpepper Society.

Santa Barbara is reputed to have a liberal atmosphere and often appears to be unwelcoming to conservative thought, as a great amount of people have Obama bumper stickers and a liberal mindset. However, to my surprise a TEA party group can still be here!

Mrs. Heather Bryden, President of the Santa Barbara TEA Party and Culpepper Society, organized her group’s entry into SB’s respective Independence Day parade. Volunteers from the group had flags from all of 50 states, all flown with the American flag. I was lucky enough to be able to walk in the parade, alongside individuals representing the tea partiers of the great state of Nevada. As the parade passed Santa Barbara’s main hub, State Street, it was quite the spectacle, with crowded sidewalks and a number of cheers for the TEA party. Some of the more seasoned members of the SB Tea Party group remembered past hostility by locals, yet said that their participation in the parade this year was generally well received.

I urge everyone to find a way to help out your local TEA party whenever given an opportunity. Happy Independence Day!
